Our Take From the Trailer

The biggest thing I took from the trailer is that this does not look like it is trying to remake the magic of the first movie beat for beat. The original lived inside 1969 Hollywood, with Rick Dalton, Cliff’s friendship with him and Tarantino’s very specific version of Los Angeles. This one jumps to 1977 and gives Cliff a life of his own, which is probably the smarter way to bring the character back.

Cliff is older, he is working alone, and now his ability to deal with dangerous people is literally part of his job. That gives the sequel a reason to exist beyond nostalgia. We get to find out what happened to this guy after his old Hollywood life changed, rather than watching him repeat the same stunt-double routine.

And then there is Fincher. The trailer has a darker, tougher edge, while the dialogue still has that loose Tarantino flavor underneath it. We obviously cannot judge an entire movie from two minutes of footage, but the combination is intriguing enough that I am very curious to see what happens when Fincher gets a full movie to play with Tarantino’s Cliff Booth.

Honestly, that may be the most exciting part of this whole thing: it feels familiar without looking like a carbon copy. That is exactly what I would want from a Cliff Booth follow-up.
