If your group chat has been sending you X-Men clips at midnight with no context, congratulations: you've caught up to Avengers: Doomsday. It lands December 18, and yes, that really is Professor X and Magneto in a Marvel movie in 2026. Here's everything that's actually confirmed, plus a few details most headlines skipped.
What Is Doomsday About?
Marvel's official line is simple: heroes from three universes are on a collision course with a threat none of them have faced before. The groups are:
- the Avengers, Wakandans and New Avengers from Earth-616
- the Fantastic Four from Earth-828
- the X-Men, from a universe of their own
It picks up about fourteen months after Thunderbolts*, with the multiverse falling apart. The villain is Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., and the Russos have said they think Doom is one of the most complex characters in Marvel comics. Their pitch for Downey was that he was the one person who could carry it.
Past that, Marvel is holding things tight. Honestly, we'd rather walk in knowing less.
Genre: Superhero ensemble · Directors: Joe and Anthony Russo · Studio: Marvel Studios · Runtime: about 165 minutes (reported) · Next film: Avengers: Secret Wars, Dec 17, 2027
Why the Fox X-Men Return Hits Different
This is the part that matters if you grew up with Twilight. The X-Men movies were everywhere when we were teenagers, and Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn are all back. Channing Tatum is in too, as Gambit.
Kevin Feige has said one goal of these two films is to give closure to Marvel storylines that existed before the MCU, including the Fox X-Men. That's a bigger promise than a cameo, and it explains why the casting is so deep.
A few small details we love:
- Alan Cumming says Nightcrawler's makeup dropped from nearly five hours on X2 to about ninety minutes this time.
- Rebecca Romijn says the faster makeup actually cost her something. She used the long chair time to get into the headspace of an angry Mystique.
- Tatum says he won't go "full Cajun" with Gambit's accent. The Russos want a more serious tone, not another running joke like in Deadpool & Wolverine.
- Downey has said the X-Men cast brought a real buzz to the set.
Release Date & Where to Watch
December 18, 2026, in theatres only. It's been a long road. The film started as The Kang Dynasty, aimed at May 2025. The 2023 writers' strike pushed it to May 2026, and Disney moved it again in May 2025 to give the team more time.
One thing to know before you book: Dune: Part Three opens the same day and has IMAX locked down in the US for at least three weeks. So Doomsday won't be on IMAX screens there. Disney is pushing its own "Infinity Vision" label for premium screens instead, and about 70% of advance tickets are already for those showings. It's opening in over 4,000 US theatres, so check what's near you before you pick a seat.
The numbers so far are wild. Premium-format tickets made $16.5 million in the first 24 hours in July, more than double what Deadpool & Wolverine did. By early September, advance sales had reportedly reached $50 million, 100 days before release, which is a first. One early tracking estimate puts opening weekend at $260 to $300 million. That's a projection, not a result.
For scale, Endgame finished around $2.8 billion and Infinity War around $2.05 billion. Variety noted that Marvel's recent box office has been rocky, which is exactly why a lot of people are watching these presales.
Cast
Tony Stark's face, Doom's mask. Yes, it's strange. Yes, we're in. He developed his own backstory for the character and pitched costume ideas too.
Evans has said he would only come back if there was a real reason. A December 2025 teaser showed Steve with a child, so something has clearly changed.
Joe Russo says Thor is back to the battle-hungry mindset of Infinity War. Rough news for whoever's in his way.
She says Shuri has fully taken on the Black Panther mantle and a leadership role.
They're the new kids in this universe, and they're not even from it. That's the whole point.
See above. We're not emotionally prepared.
Confirmed at Comic-Con this year. Given where Steve's story ended, we have thoughts.
The rest of the roster includes Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Kathryn Newton, Winston Duke and Tenoch Huerta Mejรญa.
How It Got Here (Kang Is Out, Doom Is In)
Marvel's original plan was Jonathan Majors as Kang. Director Destin Daniel Cretton left in November 2023, Michael Waldron was brought in to rewrite the script, and in December 2023 Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment and Disney dropped him. The whole multi-film plan had to be rebuilt.
Marvel looked at other directors, and Shawn Levy was reportedly a top choice for a while. Then Marvel approached Robert Downey Jr. about playing a new character, Victor von Doom. He said he'd only return if the Russos came back too. The Russos have said they turned down another Avengers film until Stephen McFeely brought them a story idea that excited them.
It was all announced together at Comic-Con in July 2024. The cast reveal in March 2025 was a livestream that ran about five and a half hours and set a record for cross-platform views.
Filming ran from April 28 to September 19, 2025, mostly at Pinewood Studios in England, with location work in Bahrain and Windsor Great Park and some filming at Shinfield Studios in Berkshire. Secret Wars is a separate shoot.
Details You Might Have Missed
- The working title was "Apple Pie 1." That was the code name used during filming.
- Most of the sets were real. Production designer Gavin Bocquet has said about 80% of the interior set backdrops were practical rather than visual effects.
- Every trailer has a countdown clock. It's a running motif in the teasers and trailers.
- Post-credits scenes were shot ahead of time. The post-credits scenes in Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps were both shot for Doomsday, and the Russos directed the Fantastic Four one.
- The crew is a reunion. Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel and Bocquet worked with the Russos on Citadel, and Sigel also shot several of the original Fox X-Men films.
- There's a comic behind it. Feige says "Time Runs Out," the Jonathan Hickman storyline leading into the 2015 Secret Wars, is an inspiration for both films.
- Doom speaks with a heavy accent. That's what trade reports from CinemaCon said.
- Downey's costume is the Russos' favorite. They've called Doom's outfit their favorite from the whole MCU.
- The teasers leaked on day one. Marvel expected that, and officially released them online soon after.
- There's an official podcast. Iman Vellani hosts a five-episode recap of the Avengers films that started in late August.
Trailers
Four short teasers ran before Avatar: Fire and Ash in December 2025, and together they passed a billion views. One had the Fantastic Four in Wakanda and Thing meeting M'Baku. Another showed Thor on one knee before a battle.
The full trailer premiered at CinemaCon in April and went online in July. The reaction was mixed, which surprised us. The "special look" in August focuses on Doom and was received much better. If you only watch one, watch that one. New footage with the late-September Endgame Encore re-release was reported to set up the fate of the Fox X-Men.
What We Still Don't Know
- Deadpool and Wolverine. Promo appearances aren't confirmation.
- Doctor Strange, Hawkeye and Spider-Man. Benedict Cumberbatch walked back his earlier comment that Strange wasn't in it. Reports have Jeremy Renner and Tom Holland returning too, but we haven't seen official confirmation.
- How Steve comes back. Evans and Mackie have hinted that Steve may take on the Nomad mantle, like in the comics. Hint, not confirmation.
- The final cut. The 165-minute runtime is what's reported, but The Hollywood Reporter says the final cut is unlikely to be locked this far out.
